Where the rubber meets the road is probably the most important part of vehicle safety. And with eventual spring rain, roadways could be littered with debris. Whether it's something that fell off a contractor's trailer or washed down a steep incline, your tires will be the first to bear the brunt. Essential to vehicle safety is a regular inspection of tires that drivers can do on their own. Here's how:

  • Before setting off or while filling up at a service station, take a cursory look at each tire. Bend or kneel and take note of cracking along the outer circumference of the tread. Should this be significant, you'll need new tires. Also, look for nails or screws lodged.
  • Check tread depth by using your fingertip. Run it along each tread channel, and if there's not much in depth, the tread is bare or soon will be.
